the buddha and the monkey

in anone day, the Buddha was meditating under a tree when monkey came along.

monkey was feeling very proud of himself and confident; he swaggered up to the Buddha and said" I, the monkey, am lord of the universe".

the Buddha took no notice and kept meditating.
monkey had an idea.
i know he said, I will prove it to you by jumping to the end of the universe

so monkey bunched himself up and jumped.

up and up and up he went for a very long time.

in the end he landed with a bump on a flat place where he saw 4 huge pillars.

this must be the end of the universe, he thought.

then, because he was a naughty vandal, he took out his pencil and wrote at the base of each pillar

I THE MONKEY AM LORD OF THE UNIVERSE

then he jumped up again.

finally he landed beside the Buddha, still meditating

you see! cried monkey, I am the lord of the universe and to prove I jumped there i wrote I THE MONKEY AM LORD OF THE UNIVERSE at the base of 4 pillars that I found there.

the Buddha said nothing but merely open his hand and said one word. "look.
monkey looked into the palm of the Buddha and he noticed something tiny at the base of his 34 fingers.

it was hard to see what it was, and he had to screw his ryes up and look very closely; yes, there were marks at the bottom of the 4 fingers of the Buddha.

it was writing and by carefully looking he could just read the words.

they said:

I THE MONKEY AM LORD OF THE UNIVERSE
